It’s a word that we are all very familiar with; one that is frequently used by our parents, friends, family and work colleagues. We naturally seek it, want it and work hard for it! What is it?
Success seems the be the magic word that we have all been conditioned to work towards in our lives and it is often how we define ourselves. Money, fame, power, prestige…Whatever it is that we’ve learned about success, we’re subconsciously chasing it, all the time.
So how do you define success? Is it having lots of money? Having a high profile job? A business that is thriving? Or is it something as simple as having a happy healthy family, with plenty of free time to spend with them?
Have you actually ever really considered what success means to you? Many of us haven’t.
In order for us to achieve what we truly want in our lives and our businesses, it’s really important for us to understand what success actually means to us as individuals. It is no good knowing what society views as a success or our closest friends and family. In order for us to be headed in the right direction, we need to figure it out for ourselves.
So how do you find out what success means to you? Here are a few ideas to get you on the right path:
Ask yourself what success is: Start small and think about your daily routines, your job, business, family and think of what you would class as a “win” or a successful outcome to a situation. For example if you have a important project that you’ve been struggling to get round to, and you finally get it completed, that’s success, right?
Write down your goals: To assist you in defining what success means to you, sit and write down your goals. We all have goals in our work lives and personal lives that we would like to achieve, and seeing these written down will help us to see what success really means to us.
Organise your goals: When you have a list of goals, put them into order of importance, you will soon see a pattern beginning to emerge that will tell you what you want from life and what will make you successful as an individual.
Free yourself: Don’t allow other people’s interpretation of success influence you. It is important that you really think about what is important to you, so that you can work towards your own personal successes.
Evaluate: Once you have determined what’s truly important to you, it’s time to evaluate whether your day-to-day habits and routines reflect this. If not, how could you adjust so that your goals become a priority? For instance, if spending lots of quality time with family is a key factor in your definition of success, then could you be delegating more in your business to make this happen?
Only once you have uncovered what success really means to you, can you start achieving it on a daily basis. Defining success will help you to stop chasing the things that you once viewed as important and allow you to concentrate on the things that will help you to achieve the success you really want.
